The flagship Vision Tameside development will be completed in the New Year and will be named Tameside One.
Work on the building – a new 7,000 m2 Advanced Skills Centre for Tameside College, a new Joint Public Service Centre for Tameside Council and its partners and retail space for Wilko – is progressing well with handover dates being finalised.
The new library, customer services, Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Cashbox, Welfare Rights and Job Centre Plus are expected to open in February with the rest of the building, the college facilities and Wilko to fully open later in the year.
Based on Wellington Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, on the former site of the Tameside Council administration building, the new Joint Public Service Centre will provide residents with more cost effective and customer friendly facilities under one roof.
Vision Tameside is one of the first public sector projects of its scale affected by the liquidation of subcontractor Carillion to have agreed arrangements to completion, with similar projects across the country either on hold or reporting delays of up to two years.
Robertson Construction Group Limited, one of the largest independently owned construction companies in the UK, replaced Carillion as subcontractor. Robertson signed an Early Works Agreement with Inspiredspaces Tameside Limited (LEP), who are contracted to design and build the flagship development. The agreement secures work for the local supply chain and includes a pledge for apprentices working on the development to be able to complete their apprenticeships.
Additional services that were provided by Carillion, including catering contracts with some schools and facilities management, have also been taken over by Robertson. The council has made it imperative that the terms and conditions of transferring staff are protected and has released £9million of funding to ensure Vision Tameside’s completion.
Vision Tameside will bring thousands of new staff and students to Ashton town centre, boosting the retail economy.
Replacing the ageing Council administrative building, which was too large, no longer fit for purpose and too expensive to run, with a smaller building incorporating the latest energy-saving technology and shared with partners, will also save taxpayers money.
Vision Tameside has also secured the future of prestigious buildings across the borough, bringing investment to all our town centres.
Tameside Council staff will be relocated to these historical buildings, bringing them back to life and keeping them maintained.
The new transport hub in Ashton-under-Lyne is expected to open in spring 2020, providing an attractive gateway and making it much easier to change between modes of transport, like trams and buses. New public realm work will connect Ashton Market Square, Tameside One and Ashton-under-Lyne Interchange.
